Alibaba.com Listing Optimization:
Why Being Listed Isn't the Same as Being Found

Your Alibaba Listing Is Live — So Why Isn’t It Bringing In Buyers?

If you’re already on Alibaba.com, you’ve done the hard part. Most manufacturers who reach out to us have already cleared that first hurdle — they have a listing, a product catalogue, maybe even a few inquiries trickling in. The question we hear most often is simpler and more frustrating: *why isn’t it doing more?*

Being listed isn’t the same as being targeted

A listing that’s technically live but poorly targeted behaves like a shop with no signage on a quiet street. It exists. It’s just not in front of the people looking for it.

We worked with one exporter who’d been listed on Alibaba for years but was stuck at 12–13 inquiries a month. After tightening keyword targeting and category placement, that climbed to over 5,000 inquiries a year.

Seasonal moments matter more than most sellers realise

Alibaba has predictable seasonal buyer surges — Super September being the best known — where international buyer activity spikes hard. One lubricant exporter ran a focused keyword strategy timed to that window and saw buyer messages jump from 240 to 813 in a year, using the same team and the same product. The only variable that changed was timing and targeting precision.

If your listing has been live for months with flat results, that’s usually a fixable targeting gap — not a product problem. It’s worth ruling that out before assuming Alibaba “just doesn’t work for your category.”

What to actually check first

Three things worth auditing before spending more on ads:

  1. **Keyword coverage** — are you ranking for the actual search terms buyers use, or just your product name?
  2. **Category placement** — is your listing sitting in the most specific, most competitive category for what you sell?
  3. **Response-to-inquiry lag** — even a well-targeted listing loses buyers if response time is slow.

Worth a second look

If your Alibaba listing has been live for a while but inquiries haven’t grown with it, a 20-minute audit is usually enough to identify whether the gap is targeting, category, or response time.
