SME AI Fest: What It Revealed About Business Readiness
Kuala Lumpur, 6 August 2025 – Beyond the energy of keynote speeches and the fun of competitions, SME AI Fest 2025 served as a litmus test for where Malaysia’s SMEs truly stand in their journey toward AI adoption.
Conversations throughout the event revealed a diverse spectrum of readiness. Some SMEs were already piloting AI tools for operations, customer engagement, or data analysis. Others were candid about being at square one — curious, but cautious.
Organisers and facilitators identified three recurring themes:
- Skills Gap – Many SMEs lack internal talent trained in AI tools or data analysis.
- Cost Concerns – Smaller firms often fear that investments in AI will not deliver quick returns.
- Mindset Barriers – Some still perceive AI as distant, futuristic, or optional.
“Most SMEs want to adopt, but don’t know where to begin,” observed one panellist. “It’s not unwillingness; it’s uncertainty.”
Changing Perceptions in Real Time
This uncertainty was challenged directly during the event. Through sessions curated by TRINITY42 Digital and hands-on activities by T42 Academy, participants saw AI reframed as something approachable.

“The Prompt Contest was eye-opening,” said one SME owner from the retail sector. “I thought AI was about robots and coding. Suddenly, I realised it could help me draft marketing ideas or improve customer interactions.”
For others, the biggest takeaway was recognising that adoption didn’t have to mean massive upfront spending. “We learnt that you can start small,” another participant shared. “Even free tools can give you a head start.”
This readiness was further highlighted by the outcomes of the Prompt Contest, where the judging panel — comprising representatives from T42 Academy, MPC, Turing, and led by Ashley Tan, Director of Learning & Digital Transformation at T42 Academy — were impressed by the creative yet practical solutions SMEs produced in real time. Beyond curiosity, SMEs displayed a clear ability to innovate when given the space and the tools.
Readiness Beyond Technology
Observers also pointed out that readiness is not only about tools or costs. It is about a leadership mindset. Those SMEs whose leaders showed curiosity and willingness to experiment appeared far more confident about next steps.

“AI readiness is as much cultural as it is technical,” said one facilitator. “The Fest helped SMEs see that openness to change is the real first step.”
By the end of the Fest, one clear pattern emerged: while SMEs may be at different points on the readiness spectrum, nearly all acknowledged that standing still was no longer an option.
For TRINITY42 Digital and T42 Academy, this was validation that awareness efforts must now give way to structured programmes that build skills and confidence.
As one organiser summarised: “The Fest didn’t solve readiness gaps in one day. But it gave SMEs the clarity that the journey has to begin now.”
