SME AI Fest: Why AI is Now Non-Negotiable for Malaysian SMEs

Kuala Lumpur, 6 August 2025 – At SME AI Fest 2025, one message rose above the rest: AI is no longer optional for small and medium enterprises (SMEs).

The statement, repeated across panels, keynotes, and casual conversations, reflected a growing recognition that the digital economy has entered a new phase — one where businesses that hesitate risk being left behind.

Speakers from across industries — technology, academia, and government — were unanimous. AI is not a trend; it is infrastructure. “For SMEs, adopting AI is now existential,” said one panellist. “The question is no longer should we adopt it? The only question left is how fast can we adapt?”

That urgency was underlined by examples shared throughout the day. From manufacturers using AI to optimise production lines to retailers deploying chatbots for 24/7 customer service, the message was consistent: those who move first gain an advantage; those who delay risk obsolescence.

Shifting Mindsets, Not Just Technology

Observers noted that while AI tools themselves are powerful, the real challenge lies in changing the way SMEs think. Many businesses remain hesitant, either due to cost concerns or a belief that AI is out of reach.

According to organisers, this is where TRINITY42 Digital and its training arm, T42 Academy, made a visible impact at the Fest. By pairing thought leadership sessions with practical demonstrations, including the now well-talked-about AI Prompt Contest. The two organisations reinforced the idea that adoption doesn’t have to begin with million-ringgit investments. It can start with a mindset shift and a willingness to experiment.

“AI felt intimidating before,” admitted one participant from the F&B sector. “After the sessions, I realised it can be small steps — automating a task, using prompts, testing tools. The important thing is to start.”

Beyond Awareness: Building Competitiveness

Panel discussions also stressed that SMEs who embrace AI early are likely to unlock advantages in productivity, efficiency, and market reach. Those who do not may find themselves priced out or outpaced by competitors.

For Malaysia’s SME community — which accounts for nearly 40% of the country’s GDP — the stakes are high. AI is no longer framed as an optional innovation. It is fast becoming the foundation of survival and competitiveness.

For TRINITY42 Digital and T42 Academy, the mission extends beyond one event. Their continued focus will be on equipping SMEs with the skills and confidence to move from curiosity to capability.

As one organiser put it: “The Fest was about sending a signal. AI is not something SMEs can wait on. It’s here, it’s accessible, and it’s already shaping the businesses that will lead tomorrow.”

And if SME AI Fest 2025 is any indication, the message has landed: AI is no longer negotiable.
